The historical archive of the Center for Montañeses Studies
The Center for Montañeses Studies played an essential role in the creation of the Historical Archive of Cantabria and has important documentary collections, some even located in its headquarters and others in the Regional Historical Archive of Cantabria, institution in which, in order to preserve in the best conditions and facilitate public access to its contents, We periodically deposit batches of documents. There is the Oña Cartulary and many other relevant documentation from the Center for Montañeses Studies that we also include, through this website, available worldwide to anyone interested.
Other collections and documents have been lent or deposited in various public entities in Cantabria., taking into account thematic and dissemination conveniences or conservation needs ( Cantabrian Maritime Museum , Image Documentation Center of the Santander City Council , Regional Museum of Prehistory, etc.) or temporarily lent for exhibitions and events.
In its collections there is basic documentation for the history of Cantabria and essential chapters of the Spanish one., both from ancient times and from modern and contemporary times. A centenary of archives with essential information for the history of the evolution of contemporary culture in Cantabria are awaiting resources for their proper organization and cataloguing..
Coinciding with the arrival of digital techniques to information management, the CEM has resumed old objectives such as the compilation of archival information of the Local Administration, addressed already in the forties of the 20th century.
We will include in this section documents of exceptional historical importance and archival or documentary interest..

Heraldry and Vexillology. In his role as Official Chronicler of Cantabria and King of Arms of the Local Entities of Cantabria -province, town halls, neighborhood meetings, associations and other smaller organizations- The Center for Montañeses Studies has acted within the framework of the powers officially assigned to it in the structure developed for this purpose in the state legal framework and the Government of Cantabria. It has been a key institution in the establishment of local shields and flags of Cantabria, including those of the former Provincial Council of Santander, collected in the democratic stage by the Government of Cantabria; has also developed, advised or informed in the files about these signs promoted by the town councils and neighborhood councils of Cantabria (In preparation).

Also in his role as Official Chronicler of the Autonomous Community of Cantabria, within the agreements that frame it, CEM is an advisory entity in this type of declarations regarding Culture., actively collaborating with the successive departments and general directorates of these modalities of Heritage. The bulk of the multimedia documentation of the Center for Montañeses Studies collects the academic events of recent years and is produced by Agustín Gándara Dueñas from the historic Santander company name El Eclipse that premiered with Bernardo Riego in the Vista Alegre neighborhood, the additional part being due to Ignacio Pombo, to whom we dedicate a fair recognition from these lines. This documentation can be consulted from the section History/Academic Events in the main menu.

The three Honorary Chroniclers or Official Chroniclers of the city of Santander, oscillating denominations according to the signs of the times in which they lived, were members of the Center for Mountain Studies who left, in addition to an important imprint in its history, material contributions to the institution's assets, that maintain their documentary validity and continue to be the subject of consultation by researchers of the specialties that they cultivated.
