THE LIBRARY OF THE MOUNTAIN STUDIES CENTER CONTINUES ITS ORGANIZATION PROCESS (2026):


After the prior preparation of the newspaper archive and the deposit of the bulk of its magazines in the Central Library of Cantabria - those published in Cantabria will be kept for consultation at the headquarters of the Center for Montañeses Studies -, from the year 2016 the registration of the general funds of the library was resumed, whose completion is scheduled in the year 2022.

It is a library specialized in studies focused on the territory of Cantabria and the geographical and cultural areas of its surroundings., whose themes can be geographically framed in Strabon's well-known paragraph: …”mountaineers, what, like i said, They are those who live on the northern side of Iberia; that is to say, the kallaikoí, ástoures and kántabroi, to the ouáskones and the Pyréne, all of whom have the same way of living“. Currently it refers fundamentally to the territory of the Autonomous Community of Cantabria and to the territories and cultures with some affinity with its historical evolution and its projection in the Iberian Peninsula and throughout the world., be it through its people, of its historical influence or its cultural contributions, artistic or scientific.

Among the various thematic specialties that the library includes, some stand out:, like the story, anthropology, the art, the architecture, or cultural heritage …, linked to the collective vocation of the Center for Montañeses Studies since it began its journey in the year 1934. There are notable funds in relation to relevant chapters of History, like the discovery, study and acceptance of the artistic ability of humanity since prehistory, initially recognized in the Altamira cave or on a local plane- knowledge about ancient Cantabria and Basque-Cantabrism, ancient historiographic movements linked to the Romanization of the North of the peninsula whose outcome served as the historical basis for the political autonomy of current Cantabria.

Some specific funds respond to specialties cultivated over many years by some of its prominent members or from donations., like the background of the chronicler Simón Cabarga, specialized in the city of Santander, Emilio Herrera's background on Carlism, the Leandro Valle fund with information about the transition to democracy, the studies of the team of botanists initially gathered under the intellectual tutelage of Manuel Laínz Gallo S.J. and Enrique Loriente Escallada who came to generate an outstanding curpus documentary, and other important blocks of knowledge that will be documented and disseminated over time.

We will include on this same page classic editions on chapters of History and various topics of interest. We highlight publications like The Caves of the Cantabrian Region, edition of Institute of Human Paleontology, o Cantabria by Enrique Flórez, but many other very interesting topics can be consulted on very varied topics., as can be seen below.

To learn about the evolution of the library of the Center for Montañeses Studies, one of its important assets, You can consult a summary that we disseminate at the monthly academic event of july 2017, or review the inventories of books made from the seventies of the 20th century and preserved until today, as the review carried out c. 1975, which would be reflected in the inventory of funds and record of purchases for the year 1977 or the one updated in the year 2008, once settled our institution in its current headquarters on Gómez Oreña Street, overcome the last of the several and destructive transfers in the long history of the institution. The last relevant contribution to the library, carried out throughout the year 2025, has been the incorporation of half a thousand works into the catalogue., work carried out within the scope of the internship collaboration agreement signed by the Center for Montañeses Studies and the University of Cantabria.

HONORARY AND OFFICIAL CRONISTS OF THE CITY OF SANTANDER: His published work and other documentary collections existing in the archive and in the library ofthe Center for Mountain Studies.

The three Honorary Chroniclers or Official Chroniclers of the city of Santander, oscillating denominations WITH the times in which they lived, were members of the Center for Mountain Studies who left, in addition to an important imprint in its history, material contributions to the cultural heritage of the institution that maintain their documentary validity and continue to be consulted by researchers in the specialties they cultivated.
