Este año 2016 está especialmente dedicado en el Centro de Estudios Montañeses al homenaje y el recuerdo de Fernando Barreda y Ferrer de la Vega (Santander, 1887-1976), el que fuera incansable investigador y su más estable y prolífico presidente, función que ejerció desde el año 1945 until 1976.
La Real Academia de la Historia nos recuerda en su biografía que Fernando Barreda y Ferrer de la Vega procedía de una familia de navieros y de negocios. Se formó en Derecho en la Universidad de Valladolid, ejerció como abogado y en diversas funciones profesionales, políticas, administrativas y culturales de la ciudad de Santander y la entonces provincia del mismo nombre, hoy Comunidad Autónoma de Cantabria. Fue uno de los impulsores y dirigentes provinciales de la Unión Patriótica durante la dictadura de Primo de Rivera, época en la que fue concejal y luego alcalde de Santander entre los años 1928 y 1930. Posteriormente fue diputado provincial (1930-1931) y volvió a serlo durante la dictadura franquista, between 1949 y 1964, llegando a ser vicepresidente de la Diputación de Santander entre 1954 y 1964. Desempeñó otros muchos cargos en entidades económicas y profesionales: president of the Official Chamber of Urban Property, de la Junta de Obras del Puerto, de la Cámara Oficial Agraria y del Tribunal Tutelar de Menores, inter alia. Hombre amante de la historia y la cultura, fue presidente del Ateneo de Santander, del Centro de Estudios Montañeses la más prolongada de sus presidencias. , de la Sociedad Menéndez Pelayo y de la Comisión Provincial de Monumentos, vicepresidente de la Institución Cultural Cantabria y académico correspondiente de la Real Academia de la Historia, la Real Academia de las Ciencias y la de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. Fue colaborador de revistas como Las Ciencias, The Santander Magazine, el Boletín de la Biblioteca Menéndez Pelayo y Altamira, además de autor de diversas publicaciones dedicadas a la historia del comercio, la navegación y la industria en Cantabria. Recibió diversas distinciones, entre ellas, la Medalla de Oro al Mérito de la Justicia en la Orden de San Raimundo de Peñafort y la Medalla de Oro de Santander.
