THE PHOTO LIBRARY OF THE MOUNTAIN STUDIES CENTER

Among the many areas in which the Center for Montañeses Studies has contributed its imprint and work to culture and the conservation and enhancement of cultural heritage, photography should also be highlighted., conceived as a resource aimed at preserving graphic memory of the territory and its history.

Unlike other lines of action, like the neat editorial work, today essential for knowledge of regional history and heritage, or the development of the well-known important museographic and archival projects, The expressiveness of photography and the systematic and precise choice of the contents of our collections mean that the photo library of the Center for Montañeses Studies should also be highlighted., substantially centered around the project called Monantañés Art Archive, a fund of great value for knowledge of artistic and architectural heritage. This photographic collection prepared by the Center for Montañeses Studies, the aforementioned Montañés Art Archive, was generated from the year 1950 and is made up of two thousand photographic images of high aesthetic and documentary quality taken by renowned Spanish photographers such as Prast, But, Ferrant… in its first phase, and in its late phase complemented by local professionals, among which Samot can be highlighted, Araúna, Sel, González-Riancho, Leaves, Bustamante u Ortega. The core collection was complemented by the personal works of photographers of great stature and profound thematic coherence.: The Artistic and Monumental Mountain of Fernando Cevallos de León, acquired by the Center for Montañeses Studies through purchase from the author's heirs, the collection of Julio García de la Puente, donation object, with images about the landscape, ethnography and the life of Campoo and the regional architectural heritage and two Duomarco albums on 19th century Santander. In relation to the first photographic collections of Santander and the province, It is unavoidable to mention the photographic collection known as the Album of the 19th Century, valuable piece that, as happened with the funds of García de la Puente and Cevallos de León in past times, It is still missing today; The same occurs with the two Duomarco albums acquired at the end of the creation of the Montañés Art Archive.

The exceptional value of these graphic backgrounds, the need for its proper conservation and management for its put into public use led to the Center for Montañeses Studies and the Image Documentation Center of the Santander City Council (CDIS) to sign a deposit agreement the year 2010, date from which these funds are available to citizens interested in this last mentioned institution.

Included on this page are the graphic indexes of most of the contents of the Mountain Art Archive, coming from the digitization carried out with its own resources at the CEM and at the end of the year 2000, preparation for the deposit of funds in the CDIS, where they can be requested under the conditions that this entity has established.

We will also incorporate, as they are located and the identification and preparation process is completed, other isolated photographic notebooks and images corresponding to various CEM projects and their collections, like the lot of Mountain Art Archive recovered in 2017, the collection of Julio García de la Puente, the four original albums The Artistic and Monumental Mountain by Fernando Cevallos de León, the Marcial Zamanillo fund that updates the decade of 1970 heritage elements followed since the beginning of the century, as well as the various donations of historical photography granted to the Center for Montañeses Studies, like the one recently done by Alberto Diaz Gomez.

THE ARTISTIC AND MONUMENTAL MOUNTAIN, by Fernando Cevallos de León (1922)

His work was acquired by the Center for Montañés Studies through purchase from the photographer's heirs in the context of the Montañés Art Archive project. It is a first-rate catalog composed of four volumes with almost four hundred images on civil and religious architecture., qualifiable as the greatest interest of its kind in Cantabria due to the extension, for the coherence and the date of the images, taken around the year 1920.
