editorial background of

BENITO MADARIAGA DE LA CAMPA

III Official Chronicler of the City of Santander (Spain)

.

Our companion at the Center for Montañeses Studies, Official Chronicler of the city of Santander, prolific intellectual producer in diverse fields, member of multiple academies and friend until he left us at the end of 2019, He agreed to the suggestion and invitation we made to him., allowing the most solid of his extensive work to be placed on this digital reading table.. From his predecessors as chroniclers of Santander, Tomas Maza Solano y José Simon Cabarga, also members of the C.E.M., our institution preserves magnificent archives, library and editorial tour, which we also disseminate on this website for the use and enjoyment of readers and researchers..

On this page we will make the printed works of Benito Madariaga available to anyone interested., some of maximum interest and topicality, and all typical of his sharp and sensitive pen. The ultimate goal is that any writing by the humanist veterinarian who investigated the bison of the Altamira Cave or biographed the marine biologist Augusto González de Linares, or the historian or critic who captured the significance of the National Institute of Oceanography or the Santander Teaching Institute itself within the evolution of Spanish educational institutions., the intellectual who studied Pérez Galdós, to Gutiérrez Solana, to Diego Madrazo, Menéndez Pelayo and numerous comparable writers and artists…, can reach interested people with some ease when many of its appreciated editions have disappeared from the publishing market and its reissue is no longer improbable.. We take this opportunity to remember the comparable appreciation earned by the work of Celia Valbuena Morán, chronicler's wife, co-author with him of some of the notable editions collected here and protagonist of the study and dissemination of some of the most notable literary analyzes written in Cantabria.

All the library contributions have already been completed, including minor collaborations (small items, prologues, introductions and some ephemera) We have been able to advance in the extensive list of articles in magazines and daily press, knowing the difficulty of identifying or accessing some of his early or printed collaborations in unusual magazines. We will try to be as exhaustive as possible in our investigations., currently counting for this objective on the generous collaboration of Celia Valbuena Morán, whom at the Center for Montañeses Studies we recognize and admire for her intellectual and human merits and for her own editorial work..

A microbiography summarized in a few lines will bring us closer to the person and the outstanding researcher born in Valladolid., native of the Asón valley and settled in Santander, protagonist of a good part of his work:

In addition to his already mentioned conditions of membership of the Center for Montañeses Studies, where he served as librarian during the presidency of Joaquín González Echegaray, and chronicler of the city in which he settled his life, He trained as a veterinarian, discipline in which he would acquire the degree of Doctor; obtained in 1966 the position of Preparer of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography at the Santander Laboratory. He worked in the Santander Provincial Delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture, next going to the Ministry of Culture, Education and Sports of Cantabria, in its Book and Library Coordination Center, later appointed as Cultural Promotion Coordinator. He is in possession of the Civil Order of Agricultural Merit as a Knight. He was local Delegate of Archaeological Excavations in 1965 . He was a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Doctors of Spain, and correspondent in Santander of the Pérez Galdós House Museum; corresponding of the Royal Academy of History and numerary of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Cantabria. Official Chronicler of Santander. For his editorial work he was named Mountain Personality of the Ateneo de Santander in 1990. He was a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Veterinary Sciences in 1991, and since 1999 until
2007 president of the Royal Society Menéndez Pelayo of Santander. He was designated Honorary Galdosista in 2001. In 2004 received the Medal of Honor from the Menéndez Pelayo International University. Has cultivated archaeological research topics, artistic, historical, literary - with preference in the biographical genre -, biological, hygienic-sanitary and veterinary…

We hope that this small compilation effort serves to keep the transcendent work of the colleague and friend who, without entering into comparisons or exclusions, We can classify our appreciated Benito as the leading intellectual and researcher of Cantabria throughout the second half of the 20th century.. The bulk of his work remains current and we can affirm that in some of the fields in which he worked so finely he will continue to be cited., in good law, by specialists dedicated to their lines of research and creation in the decades to come, consideration that forces those of us who participate in this small effort to make public their entire editorial work as an obligation and great personal satisfaction..
