JOSÉ SIMÓN CABARGA

II Official Chronicler of the City of Santander

This prominent member of the Center for Montañeses Studies was born in Santander the year 1902. Trained in Commerce and Journalism, He developed studies on the history of his hometown, giving notoriety, after tremendous work, to the figure of the Official Chronicler of Santander, honorary function of the Santander city council in which he replaced Tomás Maza Solano. He died in Madrid in the autumn of 1980.

His career as a journalist began in the third decade of the 20th century., specializing in agricultural and livestock issues of Cantabria and the artistic and cultural world of Santander, He was also well known for his skill as a caricaturist at a time when this skill still sometimes had advantages over photographic portraiture in journalism.. He signed some collaborations with the pseudonym “Apeles” and, in late period, as “Pedro de Becedo” or “Jesús Ponte”. His professional journalistic work was long and varied, from El Cantábrico or El Pueblo Cántabro to El Diario Montañés, the newspaper Alerta and La Hoja del Lunes, of which he was also the first director. In parallel to his journalistic profession, since the year 1947 He went on to direct the old municipal museum of Santander until his debated resignation last year. 1978, providing the necessary coherence to generate the Municipal Museum of Fine Arts that has survived to the present day. He was awarded numerous awards, distinctions, decorations and appointments for his works and career in different fields.

José Simón Cabarga was a prominent member of the Center for Montañeses Studies, cultural organization to which I felt great pride to belong. After dedicating the last few years to putting in order the information and documentation gathered throughout a lifetime, after his death his archive y library They were donated to this institution by his heirs, and its documentary sources frequented by numerous researchers.

Still little exploited, In the middle of the 20th century, he gathered information on microfilm about the War of Independence from Arfrench goats, generating and collecting abundant additional information, partly still unpublished, about this historical event.
