Dr. D. PEDRO CASADO CIMIANO

He was born in Santander on 25 November 1936.

He studied high school at La Salle school in his hometown., and revalidated it in Valladolid with the Pre-University course in June 1953. At the same time as the bachelor, and taking advantage of the summers, studied Commercial Expertise at the Santander School of Commerce.

He obtained a bachelor's degree in Chemical Sciences from the University of Madrid in the year 1959 and the doctorate in Chemical Sciences, with an outstanding rating how praise, at the University of Oviedo in 1971.

His intense professional activity was developed mainly in three facets: industrial, teacher and researcher.

He began his faceta industrial in January 1961 upon employment in the SAM Dairy Cooperative of Renedo de Piélagos as Chief Laboratory Chemist, position he held until the year 1972, in which he assumed responsibility for the Technical Management of the factory. In 1978, upon integrating the SAM Cooperative into La Lactaria Española (READ) del THIS, was appointed Director of the Research and Development Division (I + D) of said business group, the most important in Spain with 10 factories in different regions. Also in 1978 believe, and since then he managed the Renedo de Piélagos plant, the Center of I + D for the development of new dairy products, true model of its kind. Until sale in 1995 of the LESA group was in charge of the Research and Development Directorate of the same, also assuming during the year 1987 the address of the Lactaria Montañesa SAM factory in Renedo.

In its teaching facet, it was for space 26 years old (1972-1998) professor of the Department of Chemistry of the University of Cantabria, Among his activities in that field, highlighting his work as director and teacher of 38 university postgraduate courses in Dairy Science and Technology, and teacher of others 20. Especially notable is the fact that he was the creator, director and teacher of the 10 editions (1988-1998) from the Master Program in Dairy Technology at the University of Cantabria, highest university degree in dairy, which postgraduates from 12 countries. To them we must add those trained by him at the Renedo R&D Center, many of whom later held management positions in the dairy industry in Spain and Latin America..

In the investigative facet, He was director and advisor of 15 research projects (official financing), as well as 34 Bachelor's and Master's works and theses. He directed the research and development of more than 100 varieties of new dairy products in the I Center + D of Grupo LESA in Renedo, many of which were the first developed and launched on the market in our country. presented 55 presentations and communications at national and international conferences, being part of the organizing committee of 16 more conferences. In 1980 y en 1983 He was appointed Spanish representative in the Groups of Experts E-29 and A-2, respectivamente, from the International Dairy Federation, based in Brussels, position that he held in these groups of researchers for nearly 20 years old.

Publications.

Public, alone or in collaboration, fifty books, more of 200 scientific and technical works in Spanish and foreign magazines and thirty long popular articles. A good part of this bulky “corpus” deals with issues from Cantabria.. Also, Since its inception, he was in charge of the Bibliographic Information Section of the magazine. Spanish Dairy Industries, in which he monthly reported on the latest scientific and technical advances and developments in the global dairy sector.. He was also director, during 10 years old, of the Annals of the Institute of Agricultural Studies.

Your book Guide for the chemical analysis of milk and derivatives It is the most consulted regarding such operations in lactological laboratories in Spain and Latin America.. Another of his monographs, Milk quality and the factors that influence it, It has been and is currently used as a textbook in several universities.

His spirit as a creator and promoter of activities led him to participate in the foundation, over the years, of various Professional associations. Concretely, intervened in the following: Lactology Section of the National Association of Chemists of Spain (ANQUESEL), of which he was president since 1973; National Group of Specialist Technicians in Mamitis and Milk Quality (G-TEMCAL), which he also presided over since its establishment on his initiative; the INTERLAB (International Association of Dairy Laboratory Directors), who contributed to creating, also presiding over the Spanish-speaking Group; the Spanish Research Management Association (ASEGEIN); the Interprofessional Association of Food Technicians and the Center for the Promotion of Quality in Cantabria, of whose boards of directors he was a member, etc.

Regarding his work at the head of professional associations, He was especially satisfied with the one carried out at ANQUESEL, and specifically the conferences and courses for postgraduates organized by the same, since during the more than 30 years in which it was chaired by him, more than a thousand participants gathered in Santander, mostly technicians and specialists from the dairy industry and official laboratories, and more of 200 teachers and lecturers, almost all prominent foreign experts. Such conferences and courses played a very important role, frequently recognized, in the training and updating of the technical staff who carried out the development of the structures of the Spanish dairy industry during those years

Other activities What stands out was his collaboration and advice in the organization of fairs and exhibitions in the food sector and especially Expoláctea., which was held first in Torrelavega and then alternatively in Gijón, in whose creation he participated very actively, being named president of the Scientific-Technical Committee established in its first edition, developed in 1981, and always in charge of the organization of the Technical Conferences that were held during the fair. Another activity carried out and with which he was also satisfied was his intervention in achieving the third Denomination of Origin for Cantabria Cream Cheese., long before others of undoubtedly more importance obtained it, like Manchego. For this reason it was subject, together with Dr. Manuel Arroyo, of a tribute by the cheese manufacturers of the region, and when the Regulatory Council of the Denomination of Origin Queso de Cantabria was created, he was appointed Technical Advisory Member of the same.

He received many distinctions in recognition of his professional merits and in May 1992 The Ministry of Agriculture granted him the Commendation of Number of the Order of Agrarian Merit, Fishing and Food.

Once retired from his professional work, He continued to lead a very active life in scientific-technical and cultural fields.. whose writings were very convoluted by dint of wanting to seem judgmental and intentional, It was until May 2012, and meanwhile 12 years old, Director of the Institute of Agricultural Studies of the Cultural Institution of Cantabria; He was also a full member of the Spanish National Dairy Committee, of the Royal Academy of Medical Sciences of Cantabria, from the Cantabrian Academy of Gastronomy, of the Royal Society Menéndez Pelayo, corresponding of the Royal National Academy of Medicine, etc.

At the Center for Montañeses Studies he entered 5 March 1990 giving the conference titled “New contributions to understand the beginnings of industrial milk production in Cantabria”, and during his 33 years of membership in the association, until serious health problems prevented him from doing so, took an active part in the life of the Center and consistently attended the monthly academic meetings, giving presentations entitled: “Contributions to the history of industrial cheese and dairy production in Trasmiera” (9-11-1992), "Waffle and ice cream pasiegos: the history of multinational MIKO " (13-12-1993) and “The SAM dairy cooperative, una empresa cántabra líder en el sector lácteo nacional (Renedo de Piélagos): 75 anniversary, 1930-2005” (3-X-2005). Published in the magazine Altamira the following jobs: “Cheese making in the Picos de Europa region at the beginning of the century” (vol. 49, 1990-91, pp. 181-218), “New contributions to the knowledge of the beginning of industrial butter production in Cantabria” (vol. 50, 1992-93, pp. 181-190), “The industrial production of cheese and other dairy products in Trasmiera” (vol. 51, 1994-95, pp. 25-49), “The industrial production of cheese and other dairy products in the Pasiega area of influence (which includes Nestlé)” (vol. 54, 1998, pp. 27-45), “The contribution of Cantabria to Spanish infant nutrition” (vol. 56, 2000, pp. 197-208) and “The centenary (1910-2010) of the first flight in Cantabria” (vol. 77, 2009, pp. 131-154).

One facet of his knowledge and hobbies to which he was able to dedicate himself more towards the end of his life was that of 19th century engravings and illustrated books., of which he was an avid collector and magnificent connoisseur. For that cause, The rector's team of the University of Cantabria named him Honorary Collaborator in the Exhibition Area of the academic institution. He donated to her 2008 the splendid collection he assembled of more than a thousand lithographs and woodcuts, which from 2 December 2011 It was named “Print Office of the University of Cantabria Pedro Casado Cimiano”. Memorable exhibitions have been organized based on it., and in several of the catalogs related to such samples the generous donor collaborated with important texts. Besides, The Madrid publishing house Ollero y Ramos published a valuable book of his entitled Biographical Dictionary of 19th Century Spanish Illustrators.

He died in Santander on 24 de junio de 2023, to the 86 years of fruitful life.
