AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

"I was born in Santander, the 24 September 1923, Mercedes day, on Lope de Vega street, and I am the second of five brothers: Carlos, Maria del Carmen, Joaquin and Ana, all also from Santander.

My father, Joaquin Gonzalez Domenech, who was consul of Argentina in Santander, He had a desk on the old street of Méndez Núñez, inherited from my grandfather, candido gonzalez, with the charge of faith and little fortune in business.

My mother, Carmen Echegaray Abascal, equally Santander, He came from an old French Basque family integrated in Spain during the Revolution and settled in Santander since the years of the first Carlist war..

I studied the first letters in nursery school Saint Teresa of Jesus, who was on Calderón street, and the baccalaureate in the Piarists, before, during and after the war.

I keep two indelible memories from that time., the war itself lived intensely and on occasion to the point of death, and the Santander fire, that it was like a tragic blow for those of us who had saved ourselves from the other. In both events, the flames swallowed an important part of my life.

I was a merchant marine graduated in Bilbao, after going through the Santander school, in which at some time, much later, I was a teacher, and I sailed for five years in Spanish ships in the midst of the second world mess, that was not small.

I studied law and took my oppositions, as is rigorous, but I dedicated my professional activity to maritime law, and that's how I saw myself one day, almost without thinking, in charge of what was then the first shipping company in Spain: the transatlantic company. But live in Madrid, far from the sea and my town, and as my wife - by then he was already married to a woman from Santander and at that time he had a few children- I also felt like leaving home, With the commissioning of the last Spanish ocean liner, I lowered the rig, we packed up and went back to the tierruca, as we said then.

And since then I have continued with the law of the sea and nautical problems, to whom I am still linked, with a parenthesis of six or seven years burned between the presidency of the Diputación (de Santander) and my government in the Canary Islands, which was almost like commanding a fleet of ships in the middle of the Atlantic.

I brought the University to Santander. I have written eleven fat books on mountain history -the first one was published in 1951 with an endearing prologue by Mr. del Río (Pick)- and another six or seven that are not so. They gave me the Virgen del Carmen national award from the Presidency of the Government in the year 1963, again in 1968 y en 1977 and I have, among other minor things kept with love, the Naval Merit Cross and the Civil Merit Cross, both with Grand Cross category. I am a number counselor of the Cultural Institution of Cantabria and director of its Juan de la Cosa Institute.

And for now I keep writing, always and only from the sea and from ships, what is mine".

But let's not think that the relations of the Santander historian and the institution in question were confined to the "presidential" era of the former.. Although marked by discontinuity in time, they happened over and over again. I will put only three examples:

in may of 1974 commemorated the Center for Mountain Studies, by holding a major academic symposium, the 40 anniversary of its foundation. To this congress Rafael presented a communication, prepared together with another unforgettable companion of the association, José Luis Maruri Gregorisch, which was entitled "Two hundred years of naval command in Santander". It would be edited later., together with the rest of the presentations and collaborations that accredited experts and scholars gave in those memorable days.

El 15 December 1978, the Center dedicated a heartfelt tribute -with a banquet included- to one of its oldest members, more involved and better pedigree: Joseph Simon Cabarga. And there were Mª del Carmen, Joaquin (then president of the institution) and Rafael González Echegaray, this located in front of the food in front of the honoree. With them, many of the "hardcore" members of the time: Mario Pérez García-Oliva, José Luis Casado Soto, Jose Uzcudun Perez of the River, The p. Patricio Guerin Betts, Arturo de la Lama Ruiz-Escajadillo, José Arias Cork, Francisco Saez Picazo, María Ealo de Sá, Manuel Vaquerizo Gil, Matilde Camus, Beloved Ortiz Mier, Fernando Guirado Gomarín, etc.

and one last note: In the report of the Center corresponding to that year 1978, which was published in volume XLI of Altamira, the following news was given: “D. Rafael González Echegaray, for the third time, has obtained the Virgen del Carmen National Award (currently Award of the Sea) for his works The Merchant Navy and maritime traffic in the Civil War and Cantabrian whalers”.

I do not keep shuffling papers because they would provide me with new news and I would extend myself too much. Suffice it with what has been mentioned up to here to record the always heartfelt and affectionate relationship of the great man from Santander whom we remember today with the Center for Mountain Studies. In the story of the same, Rafael and his brothers will perpetually remain as fundamental pillars and examples to imitate.
