Our partner at the Center for Mountain Studies, Cronista Oficial de la ciudad de Santander, intellectual prolific producer in various fields, member of multiple academies and friend until he left us at the end of 2019, agreed to the suggestion and invitation that we made, allowing pose this table as solid digital reading of his extensive work. De sus antecesores como cronistas de Santander, Tomás Maza Solano and Joseph Simon Cabarga, also members of the C.E.M., conserva nuestra institución magníficos archivos, library and publishing travel, that we also disseminate on this website for the use and enjoyment of readers and researchers.

En esta página iremos poniendo a disposición de cualquier interesado los trabajos impresos de Benito Madariaga, some of most interest and relevance, and all his own acute and sensitive pen. The ultimate goal is that any written humanist veterinarian who investigated the bisons of Altamira Cave or biografió the marine biologist Augusto González de Linares, or historian or critic who captured the significance of the National Institute of Oceanography or the Institute of Education Santander in the evolution of Spanish educational institutions, the intellectual who studied Perez Galdos, Gutierrez Solana, Diego Madrazo, a Menéndez Pelayo y a numerosos escritores y artistas equiparables…, can reach interested persons with some ease when many of its valued editions have disappeared from the publishing market and their reissue is unlikely.. We take this opportunity to remember the comparable earned appreciation for the work of Celia Valbuena Morán, esposa del cronista, co-author with him of some of the notable editions collected here and protagonist of the study and dissemination of some of the most appreciable literary analyzes written in Cantabria.

Completed all the book contributions, including minor contributions (small items, prologues, introductions and some ephemera) we have been able to advance in the extensive list of articles in magazines and daily press, knowing the difficulty of identifying or accessing some of his early collaborations or those printed in unusual magazines. We will try to be as thorough as possible in our inquiries., counting at this time for this purpose with the generous collaboration of Celia Valbuena Morán, whom we at the Centro de Estudios Montañeses recognize and admire so much for her intellectual and human merits and for her own editorial work.

A microbiography summarized in a few lines will bring us closer to the person and the outstanding researcher born in Valladolid, native of the Asón valley and settled in Santander, protagonist of a good part of his work:

In addition to the aforementioned conditions of membership of the Center for Mountain Studies, in which he worked as a librarian during the presidency of Joaquín González Echegaray, and chronicler of the city where he settled his life, trained as a veterinarian, discipline in which he would acquire the degree of Doctor; got in 1966 the position of Trainer of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography in the Santander Laboratory. Worked in the Provincial Delegation of Santander of the Ministry of Agriculture, going on to the Ministry of Culture, Education and Sport of Cantabria, at its Coordinating Center for Books and Libraries, later assigned as Coordinator of Cultural Promotion. He is in possession of the Civil Order of Agricultural Merit as a Knight. He was local Delegate of Archaeological Excavations in 1965 . He was a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Doctors of Spain., and correspondent in Santander for the Pérez Galdós House Museum; correspondent of the Royal Academy of History and numerary of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Cantabria. Official Chronicler of Santander. For his editorial work he was named Mountain Personality of the Ateneo de Santander in 1990. He was a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Veterinary Sciences in 1991, and from 1999 until
2007 President of the Royal Society Menéndez Pelayo de Santander. He was designated Honorary Galdosista in 2001. In 2004 received the Medal of Honor from the Menéndez Pelayo International University. Has cultivated archaeological research topics, artistic, historical, literary -preferably in the biographical genre-, biological, hygienic-sanitary and veterinary…

We hope that this small compilation effort will serve to keep available to researchers and the general public the transcendent work of the colleague and friend who, without entering into comparisons or exclusions, We can classify our appreciated Benito as the leading intellectual and researcher in Cantabria throughout the second half of the 20th century.. The bulk of his work remains current and we can affirm that in some of the fields in which he worked so finely, he will continue to be cited, in good law, by specialists dedicated to their lines of research and creation in the decades to come, consideration that forces us to assume those of us who participate in this small effort to publicize their entire editorial work as an obligation and great personal satisfaction.
